A 50-year-old male suspect has been apprehended for allegedly raping an 18-year-old student who attended year 12 at a school near Auki town, Malaita.
Supervising Provincial Police Commander (PPC) of Malaita Province, Superintendent Michael Ramosaea, said the suspect in relation to the rape incident is a teacher by profession.
PPC Ramosaea said, “It was alleged that early in the morning on the 3 October 2025, the suspect went into the victim’s room, threatened the victim by force, and raped her.”
Superintendent Ramosaea said, “The suspect escaped after committing the offense and was arrested on the 13th of October, 2025.”
“The victim was taken to the hospital after the rape incident for medical attention. She also goes through counselling, and now she is at her home village,” said Mr. Ramosaea.
The suspect has been charged for the offense of rape contrary to section 136F of the Penal Code, 2016 Amendment.
He will appear before court on a later date.
The provincial police chief said this is a very sad incident that involved someone who had been trusted for taking care of children.
“Far worse is that the suspect is a school teacher.
“This incident had impacted the victim and disturbed her school, especially now that it’s been nearly the completion of her school year.
“Appeal to the education authority to look into such matters seriously to prevent future incidents such as this,” he said.
