The temporary cancellation of MV Auki Express and the rescheduling of MV Pelican services to Malaita Provincial capital of Auki has significantly affected many people, particularly business operators and travelers who rely heavily on these shipping services.
Since last week, dozens of passengers who had planned to travel to Honiara were unable to do so due to the suspension of the Auki Express service and adjustments to the MV Pelican schedule.
For many residents of Auki and surrounding communities, these vessels are the primary and most affordable means of transportation between Malaita and Honiara.
Franjti Shipping, the operator of MV Auki Express, issued a public notice announcing the cancellation of its services to Auki for the week.
The notice reads:
“Auki express service cancellation notice – march 2nd – 7th, 2026.
Resumption service next Monday March 9th, 2026.
Franjti shipping sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience this cancellation may cause.
The cancellation has caused considerable inconvenience for members of the public.
Market vendors and shop owners in Auki have reported delays in the arrival of goods and supplies from Honiara, affecting stock levels and daily sales.
Some consumable goods expected last week could not be transported, resulting in financial losses for traders.
Passengers traveling for medical appointments, official duties, and family commitments have also been impacted.
Many are now forced to wait until services resume next week, creating uncertainty and additional expenses for accommodation and rescheduling.
Some from Honiara who have attended meeting in Auki are expected to return this week have also been delayed, potentially affecting their work.
With limited alternative transport options available, the disruption highlights the heavy reliance of Malaita residents on regular and reliable shipping services.
Community members are hoping services will resume as scheduled this week to ease the growing inconvenience.
There have been calls by travellers for the provincial authorities to consider allowing other vessels to serve the route.
