Residents of Western provincial capital of Gizo, are raising concerns over a growing number of theft incidents reported across the township.
In recent days mobile phones and personal belongings were amongst the most commonly stolen items.
Reports reaching this paper indicate that thieves have been moving around residential areas and public places, targeting individuals and quietly taking valuables such as mobile phones, bags, and other personal property.
Two separate incidents were reported on Tuesday at Jah Mountain, where residents said thieves stole several items, including mobile phones and luggage.
The incidents have left residents worried about their safety and the security of their belongings, especially at night.
Similar reports have also recently emerged from Gizo Hospital.
Sources said mobile phones were allegedly taken from patients’ bedrooms and hospital wards, raising concerns about the safety of personal belongings even within medical facilities.
Community members said petty crimes such as phone snatching and house break-ins have been reported in the past, but the recent increase in cases has heightened fears among residents.
In previous years, Gizo Town has also experienced incidents involving stolen outboard motors, solar panels, and shop break-ins.
Local leaders and community members are now calling for stronger vigilance and cooperation within neighborhoods to help deter thieves.
They are urging residents to keep their valuables secure and report suspicious activities to the authorities.
Residents hope that increased police patrols and greater community awareness will help curb the rising theft cases in Gizo.
Meanwhile, community leaders are encouraging residents to look out for one another and work closely with law enforcement to ensure the safety of the town.
