PEOPLE living on the island of Tikopia in Temotu province who experienced food shortage recently have received 1200 bags of rice (20Kg) from their Member of Parliament (MP) Freda Tuki Soriacomua last week.
The consignment of rice were delivered to them including some community projects and building materials for reconstructing the deteriorating Tikopia area health centre Tuesday.
The MP personally travelled to the constituency to deliver the relief goods, project goods and building materials.
The relief assistance came from the constituency funds.
“These bags of rice are mainly for Tikopia since they were without food after cyclone Pam hit them early this year.
“I understand that Tikopia was badly affected by cyclone Pam and food is one of their major problems since their garden foods have been destroyed,” Ms Soriacomua said.
She said the assistance may not go down well with the community but this is to supplement their daily diet on the island.
“I know people on this island might not be happy with this assistance but this is what the constituency is able to help the community with.
She said, the constituency will continue to support the people from time to time.
Ari Rangi a school teacher of Safoa community high school thanked the MP for her assistance which would help those people living in the islands.
“The food assistance given by MP would help parents to provide food for school children since their food garden foods were destroyed and we are slowly recovering from the recent cyclone Pam.”
During the constituency tour, the MP was able to deliver canteen projects to 17 people.
