Malaita Province Fisheries experts have successfully conducted a week long training for farmers in South Malaita recently.
The training was hosted for Waitoto, Apunepara conservation association groups.
The training is part of the Malaita Province Fishery office to equip farmers with the knowledge of tilapia farming.
And also preparation for the newly introduced new, fast-growing tilapia species called Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT).
The first broodstock is expected to arrive and undergo quarantine in 2025 before being moved to the Aruligo Aquaculture facility In Guadalcanal to begin breeding programs before distribute to farmers including farmers in Malaita.
Malaita Province Fisheries officer and facilitation of the training Mathew Isihanua training over opportunity to farmers to farm and manage tilapia farms.
He said, the farmers also learn how to construct fish ponds according to recommended measurements, carry out soil test and shaping of ponds.
He said, this is one of their alternative livelihood activities integrated with mangrove ecosystem management.
