The Solomon Islands National U16 Futsal Team, the Jr Kurukuru, suffered defeat in their opening Group B match of the Mitre FA National Futsal Championship (Boys U16 category), going down 5–3 to a strong Football West U16 side on Tuesday at the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre in Queensland, Australia.
The Australian side led 2–1 after an intense first half and extended their advantage to 3–1 shortly after the break.
The Jr Kurukuru responded strongly in the latter stages of the second half, fighting back to level the score at 3–3.
However, two late goals from the home side sealed the three points.
Speaking to Star Sports after the match, head coach Stanley Puairana said costly mistakes proved decisive but described the match as a valuable first experience for his young squad.
“I think we need to improve our concentration and stay more focused on the game plan. In terms of strength and physicality, the home team had bigger and taller players, which was a disadvantage for us.
“But overall, it was a good game and I am happy with how the boys performed,” he said.
Puairana added that the team is expecting another tough match and will focus on improving their mistakes while ensuring good recovery.
It will be a must-win situation for the Stanley Puairana-coached side in their two remaining matches if they are to advance to Friday’s semi-finals.
The Jr Kurukuru will face NSW Thunder U16 in their second match today at 12:45pm (Australian time).
