Solomon Airlines grounds team successfully completed a specialized training on the recently acquired ground handling equipment from China.
The completion of the training marked a key milestone under the second Solomon Island Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), funded by the World Bank in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA).
The training was conducted by the supplier of the new equipment, Shanghai Cartoo Machinery Company Limited which focused on the operation of various ground support systems.
These equipment include; a container loader, mobile passenger stairs, two baggage tugs, a golf buggy, a 10ft pallet dolly, and two specialized passenger lifts designed to assist individuals with disabilities.
According to Solomon Airlines’ Ground Operations Manager (International), Obed Odogari, the training has significantly enhanced the team’s ability to manage ground handling operations efficiently and safely, improving speed and precision so passengers and cargo are able to move more easily and quickly through Solomon Islands’ main international gateway.
Solomon Airlines’ Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sean Te’o, expressed his appreciation to the supplier for promptly delivering the training and thanked the World Bank for its financial support.
He also acknowledged the collective efforts of MCA and the SIRAP2 Project Support Team in advancing aviation infrastructure for Solomon Islands.
MCA’s Permanent Secretary Alwyn Danitofea, highlighted the importance of the training, stating that it equips Solomon Airlines’ ground staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to optimize the operation of the new equipment, ensuring smoother and faster ground handling services.
Equipment trainer, Echo Yang, praised the enthusiasm and engagement of Solomon Airlines staff during the training sessions, expressing her satisfaction with their progress.
The SIRAP2 initiative encompasses a broader range of aviation and road infrastructure improvements, including the construction of a new rescue fire service station and an aviation complex building at Honiara Airport, and a new air traffic control towers at Honiara and Munda Airports.
Additional improvements are also underway at Santa Cruz (Lata) Airfield, along with upgrades to bridges in Malaita and road improvements in Noro, Western Province.
