INTERNET access is essential in today’s hyper-connected world, and is particularly important for students perusing higher education at the university level.
Broadband connectivity is transforming traditional education and improving instruction through more engaging, interactive coursework.
The ability to easily access that content, and engage on social networks, has dramatically escalated the demand for high-quality internet access on the Solomon Islands.
That is why at Our Telekom, we have made it our mission to positively impact the lives of both students and educators who have limited internet access due to geographic barriers, and has invested in providing that service for our subscribers.
With it, teachers can use cloud-based resources and curriculum, and students can access infinite amounts of information, and share it online through virtual classrooms.
In an effort to directly support its students, Solomon Islands National University partnered with O3b Networks, a global satellite service provider, to enable next generation connectivity throughout the campus.
Access to broadband connectivity allows the university to significantly increase bandwidth and improve the speed and quality of internet for students, faculty and staff without breaking the bank.
To see first hand the immense impact high-quality broadband connectivity is having on the day-to-day life of its students, a few of our team members visited Solomon University and interviewed IT managers and students to get an inside look of the digital transformation on campus. Here’s what we found:
- Since introducing the fiber-like connectivity, Internet access at the university has improved dramatically for students; they are more efficient, can carry out more in depth research and access resources in other parts of the world, like Australia and New Zealand.
- The speed and quality of connectivity has given both USP and SINU the ability to expand on available resources and improve the current campus network. And;
- IT managers explained how they have expanded its Wi-Fi reach and has also increased access terminals in the classrooms, libraries, and AV rooms as a result of better, faster Internet connectivity.
Beyond access to internet – these changes are advancing curriculum content. Higher quality Internet means a higher quality education.
Before this installation, students had trouble loading videos and transferring large files.
Now, they can easily stream the latest and most to-date video tutorials and upload assignments with confidence, reducing stress.
Reaction to the upgraded service has been incredibly positive, and has been described by students with words like: faster, significantly better, reliable, too good, very convenient now, easy access, ultra faster page loads, ultra faster uploads, true broadband.
In addition to education, the Solomon Islands’ government also understands how essential high-quality connectivity is for residents and businesses on the islands.
As a result of an uptick in usage, Solomon Islands is upgrading its capacity and receiving antenna size to keep up with demand.
We are thrilled to be a part of enabling this positive change throughout the region, and transforming the lives of its residents.
