West Honiara’s Lot 4 unsealed road maintenance project, undertaken by local civil contractor Trades Transformation Company (TTC), is on schedule with 80% of their work scope completed.
Lot 4 includes Namoruka Road, Wind Valley Road, and Independence Valley Road.
TTC engineer Raymond Steven said, their road crew has recently completed unsealed road works on Namoruka and Wind Valley Road.
Unsealed road works involve regrading, drainage improvement, repair of washed-out road sections, vegetation clearance, regraveling with aggregates and compaction, and realignment of the road boundary for future expansion.
The engineer said they now focus on completing the Independence Valley Road: pavement restoration at washed-out sections and placement of road base material for the entire road length. Further, TTC’s scope includes construction of a U-drain and installation of gabion baskets to further strengthen the road infrastructure from heavy downpours.
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development’s (MID) Transport Infrastructure Division continues to oversee the project, providing supervision for the past two months, ensuring compliance with safety standards, quality control measures, and adherence to contractual specifications.
MID’s Safeguards unit also continues to provide oversight in dealing with social or environmental concerns that arises from this road maintenances.
Meanwhile, Naya Construction Limited has successfully completed their assigned section of unsealed roads in Lot 2, which includes Lepping Road, Mosquito Valley, Independence Road, Australian High Commissioner’s Road, Epalle School Road, Tavio Ridge, and Tingge Ridge Road. Naya is expected to continue periodic maintenance activities on these roads as stipulated in their contract.
Maintenance work on Lot 1 (Mbokona, Mbuburu 1 and 2, Vasakena, and Tolu Avenue Roads) and Lot 3 (including Fifi Road, Ngossi Valley Road, Tasahe Drive, Tasahe B, and Agape Road) is also progressing well.
Funding for these road maintenance projects is sourced from the government’s Enhanced Infrastructure Program (EIP), aligning with the priorities outlined in the National Transport Plan 2017-2036.
