POLICE in Malaita Province have reported a concerning rise in under-age drinking, particularly amongst students, in public areas around Auki.
During the first crime prevention operation conducted in Auki two weeks ago, officers arrested three young men and issued warnings to several under-age boys and girls found drinking and causing public disturbances.
Malaita Provincial Police Operation Manager Michael Ramosaea, said the operation revealed that many youths, especially students, were consuming alcohol in public places near local communities.
“We conducted patrols in areas including Kilu’ufi, Fasitoro, Sikitae, and Kunu where we observe several instances of disorderly behavior caused by young people drinking in public spaces,” Mr. Ramosaea said.
He highlighted that while police continue to work hard to address factors contributing to such behavior, community cooperation is essential.
He urged residents to support law enforcement by reporting individuals involved in brewing and distributing illegal alcohol, such as kwaso.
Police in Auki have acknowledged that one of the ongoing challenges in addressing crime is the reluctance of some community members to report incidents to authorities.
