SOLOMON Islands United Party (SIUP) has expressed its sincere condolences to one of its members and former Member of Parliament (MP) for Central Honiara, the Late Alfred Efona who has passed on, Tuesday.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, 9th April, the Party said, “it is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we, the United Party family, mourn the passing of our dear brother, mentor, colleague, and friend — (Hon.) Alfred Efona, former Member of Parliament for Central Honiara (2019–2023).”
The statement said, Late Alfred was not only a dedicated public servant but a man of unwavering principle, humility, and conviction.
“His leadership within our United Party and the National Parliament was marked by integrity, quiet strength, and a steadfast commitment to God and the people he served.
“He championed the voices of ordinary citizens and worked tirelessly to build a future grounded in accountability and unity during his tenure.
Within the United Party, Late Alfred was more than just a political member — he was a respected figure and mentor.
“He mentored many of us with wisdom and patience, always willing to listen and guide with a calm presence. His belief in collective leadership and his vision for a better Solomon Islands inspired us and left an imprint we will carry forward.
“Today, we honour the life of a remarkable man whose legacy of service and leadership will live on.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his beloved family, loved ones, relatives and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.
“Rest in peace, (Hon.) Alfred Efona. You will be dearly missed, but your light and legacy will continue to guide us. With respect and sorrow. The United Party Family,” the statement concluded.
Late Alfred a private businessman came into power during a by-election in 2019 after Late John Moffat Fugui lost his seat in a petition case filed against him for bribery.
He came second to Late Fugui during the 2019 national general elections.
Late Fugui’s wife was a candidate in the by-election but was unsuccessful. She came third.
Late Alfred saw off a field of 10 candidates which included the former Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo.
Lilo came second in that by-election. He eventually won during the 2024 national general elections.
