Through the columns of your widely circulated daily newspaper I would like to raise my concern over public transport buses running short bus routes within our town. This issue has caused the public to face a problem in relation to the overcrowding of rail users at the main bus stops in the town, which has caused many delays in the arrival time for the public at their respective homes after working hours. However, in the morning, one has to accept the short route for early arrivals to schools and work places despite the expense of the unauthorized route.
This short-route-transportation is operated by individual private buses. Those public buses usually operate short routes due to traffic jamming within our town’s main road. The alternative is said to also be associated with cash flow. They take short routes in order to avoid the jamming of traffic on our main roads, and it is also said that in doing this they gain more cash flow or even hide away from authorities as a result of an expired license for both the bus and the driver. However, those buses operate under Honiara city council.
Therefore, I strongly feel that there is an urgent need to control this tendency with our city town council. Our city council needs to control this tendency within our city town. Our city council must initiate enforcement against these private buses to instill a scene of short route transportation in our Honiara town’s main road. This is to ensure strict implementation of a transportation license for public transportation operating in our town. When accessing the licenses from the city council, heavy and extreme penalties should be imposed against those violating license rules.
