THE Honiara City Council (HCC) law enforcers yesterday grazed the main streets of Honiara to remove betel-nut vendors.
They remove a good number of people sitting along the streets selling betel-nut and cigarettes.
But for how long, as these vendors normally dissolve into the crowd when they see law enforcers and reappear after the law enforcers are gone, was the question that was satisfactorily answered by the law enforcement head Robert Madeo.
“We are stepping up our patrols again. This monitoring exercise will continue daily to ensure no vendors are on the streets.
“We will continue to be visible despite lack of proper logistical support.”
Yesterday’s campaign saw a number of vendors within the HCC area to the National Museum removed and their markets confiscated.
Mr Madeo issued a stern warning to vendors that there will be no mercy.
“These people have repeatedly been warned. Recently, those caught were prosecuted. Now prosecution will continue.
“We will not back down. We will continue to keep a close eye on the streets and our warning stands.” Mr Madeo said.
He said they will eventually expand their patrols through alleys and other back way streets.
Mr Madeo reminds Honiara residents to cooperate and abide by the city laws.
“It is our responsibility to keep Honiara clean. We are enforcing the laws but your cooperation is vital in this process, so work with us. Stop littering our city.”
