Waimapuru National Secondary School (NSS) in Makira Ulawa Province on Wednesday receive a new tractor along with a grass slasher and ploughing disc, from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL).
The handing over was described as a historic occasion for the school.
The support was made possible through funding from the People’s Republic of China, facilitated by MAL under the leadership of the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Franklyn Derek Wasi.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Principal of Waimapuru Casper Muaki said, the new machinery would have lasting impact on both farming and learning.
“This event will be forever remembered, not only for the provision of the tractor and its implements, but also for the genuine concern and care shown towards the learning and welfare of both students and teachers,” the principal said.
He added that the tractor directly supports the school’s 2025–2027 Development Plan, which focuses on improving school farming for income generation, enhancing student nutrition at the dining hall, and equipping students with practical learning skills for their future.
Minister Wasi, himself a former student of Waimapuru described the event as both proud and humbling.
“This school saved my life. The lessons, the discipline, and the values I gained here guided my journey and helped me serve our nation,” he said, recalling his time as a student from 1997 to 2001.
“This gift is not about providing a machine. It is about building capacity, opening opportunities, and empowering our youth. Agriculture must become attractive not just to older generations, but also to young people like the students here today.

“Our vision is clear: we must modernize agriculture, strengthen food security, and create new opportunities for youth employment and agribusiness.”
The Minister emphasized that the tractor would support both food production and agricultural training at Waimapuru, equipping students with skills that extend beyond the classroom and into communities and future businesses.
Concluding his address, he echoed the school’s motto:
“Train a youth, build a nation. This tractor is a small step, but one that strengthens the vision of our government, the work of the ministry, and the future of our youth.”
The official handover ended with the symbolic presentation of the tractor, slasher, and ploughing disc to the school administration.
The ceremony was witnessed by the school staff, students and supporters.
