Government through the Ministry of Health has been encouraged to adopt proactive leadership in advancing the long-overdue development of a provincial hospital for Guadalcanal Province.
Speaking in Parliament, the Leader of Opposition Hon. Matthew Wale has raised the question of whether the Government has any plans to build a provincial hospital for Guadalcanal.
While acknowledging the response given by the Minister for Health, which attributed delays to the provincial government’s processes, Wale proposed that the Ministry must now rise above the delays and take lead.
“The need for a provincial hospital in Guadalcanal is urgent. The population is growing rapidly, and the current state of health services cannot meet the demand.
“ The urgency of the situation requires the Ministry to assume a leading or proactive role, at the very minimum,” Hon. Wale said.
Hon. Wale expressed concern that the current committee-driven approach would result in further delays, with little to no progress.
“If the Ministry continues to wait passively, then the delay will continue. It must lead. At the very least, the Ministry must ensure that funding is included in next year’s national budget and establish broad timelines to generate and sustain momentum,” Hon. Wale said.
Hon. Wale said that the Ministry of Health must move beyond these delays and demonstrate proactive leadership in delivering this critical project.
“The people of Guadalcanal have waited long enough and deserve timely access to essential health services,” Hon. Wale concluded.
