RESIDENTS of Western Provincial capital of Gizo and the surrounding communities and islands have a lot to smile for after the skies open up its gates to bring much needed showers.
Although there have been some frequent showers in the past week, the showers did not last long.
However, the shower over the weekend was described as a blessing after rain started late Saturday evening and went on until late Sunday.
Most of the water tanks which have been at low level status were filled.
Some of the streams and wells have been flooded and overflowed respectively.
A resident of District in Gizo, Fulton Golton described the showers as a blessing for the township which had been experiencing less rainful since late last year.
He said, although rain passed through Gizo in the past weeks, it did not last long denying residents from much needed water.
“The showers over the weekend, was much longer bringing excitement to the residents,” he said.
Nearby streams have been flooded and even washed away some of the small bridges rubbish.
Residents also came out to clean the streams during the heavy flooding.
Most of the residents came out to fill up containers and bottles with water.
Reports from nearby islands around Ranoggah, Simbo, Kolombangara and Vella revealed heavy showers had also been experienced which caused landslide and rivers to flood.
As a result it had affected their water supply.
Rence Joshua from Ranoggah said, some of the rivers and streams have been flooded making it difficulty for villagers to cross rivers and streams.
He said, villagers also experienced flooding and landsliding to their gardens.
The heavy showers also restricted movements by outboard motors from the nearby islands to Gizo on Sunday morning.
Some of the market vendors from Ranoggah had to delay their trip to Gizo in the morning due to bad weather.
The weather office had issued a heavy rain warning last week to parts of the country.
