Plans are underway to establish a mushroom farm at Mile 6, just outside of Gizo town in Western province.
Its a move aimed at boosting local food production and creating new income opportunities for communities and the province.
The initiative is spearheaded by Western Provincial Government (WPG) in collaboration with Fujian Province under People’s Republic of China (PRC).
The project is expected to introduce modern mushroom farming techniques that are both sustainable and suitable for the region’s climate.
As part of preparation, two agriculture officers under the Western Province Agriculture Division will undergo two weeks study in Fujian Province in the coming months.
After the study the two officers will bring back the grass that called Elephant grass known as Napier grass, Pennisetum pupureum.
According to the Premier of Western Province Billy Veo, the Mile Six farm will focus on cultivating giant mushrooms, which are in high demand in both local and regional markets.
“We believe this project has the potential to empower rural families and moreover help to boost a generating revenue income for the province.
‘’While the plan is to farm mushrooms at the Mile 6 farm, the special grass from Fujian Province can also be harvested to feed animals such as cows, pigs, chickens, creating a circular farming model,’’ Premier Veo told Solomon Star in an interview.
The site at Mile 6 was selected due to its proximity to water sources, accessible land, and potential for expansion and a proposed small township.
Once operational, the mushroom farm is expected to supply fresh produce to markets in Gizo and beyond, reducing reliance on imported vegetables and promoting food security in the province.
