The Western Provincial Disaster Operations Committee (PDOC) has officially declared that the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC) is now activated.
This is to respond to emergency cases affecting parts of Western Province following the current natural disaster brought about the severe tropical cyclone Maila which had generated strong winds, heavy rain, and high swells.
As a result it has caused havoc to coastal parts of the region damaging properties and infrastructure.
Chairman of the Provincial Disaster Committee (PDC) Colin Potakana on Monday 6th April officially declared the activation of centre in Gizo allowing all responsible authorities and emergency response teams to coordinate relief assistance, carry out assessments, and support affected communities across the province.
Reports received by the committee indicated that several coastal communities in Western Province have experienced flooding, damage to houses, fallen trees, and destruction of gardens yet to be reported and boat sheds due to strong winds and rough seas over the past few days.
The PDOC is now working closely with the Provincial Disaster Management Office, police, health authorities, and provincial officers to monitor the situation and prepare relief supplies if conditions worsen.
Communities in low-lying coastal areas are advised to remain alert, move to higher ground if necessary, and listen to official updates from authorities.
The PDOC said further updates will be released as assessment teams continue to gather information from affected areas across the province.
Meanwhile the emergency number to call is 60181.
The Disaster Office is currently stationed at the Gizo Tophill.
