The Western Provincial Government (WPG) has expanded economic opportunities for women through the establishment of markets and women-led initiatives across the province.
Provincial Secretary Patrick Toiraena highlighted this during the International Women’s Day celebration in Gizo provincial capital of Western Province on Monday at the Netball Stadium.
Mr Toiraena said markets have already been established in Gizo, Noro and Munda, with a new market facility in Seghe expected to open later this year.
He said the markets provide an important platform for women vendors to sell their produce and generate income to support their families.
“We have also established vendors’ associations to represent women vendors and to strengthen collaboration between vendors and market management,” Mr Toiraena said.

He added that women’s savings clubs have also been set up in several wards, allowing women to manage and grow their small savings while supporting household livelihoods.
Mr Toiraena encouraged other wards across the province to establish similar savings clubs to empower more women economically.
He said the Western Provincial Government continues to promote women’s participation in community development through representation in Ward Development Committees.
Mr Toiraena said the initiatives form part of the provincial government’s policy framework aimed at increasing women’s involvement in economic and community development.
He also acknowledged the contributions of women in supporting families and communities across Western Province.
