A woman is in critical condition at Helena Goldie Hospital following a road accident in Noro, West Province over the weekend.
Reports received by Solomon Star stated that the woman sustained severe injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Noro.
Medical sources confirmed she is currently receiving treatment at Helena Goldie Hospital in Munda, and there are indications she may be referred to Honiara for further medical assessment.
The incident occurred on Friday night after the official opening of the new tar-sealed road in Noro.
The driver of the vehicle has been identified as church leader who resides in Munda, Western Province.
Sources allege that church official was driving without a valid driver’s licence and was reportedly using a “VIP” permit arrangement that is not provided for under current traffic laws.
It is also alleged that a former moderator of the church had previously driven under a similar VIP permit arrangement.
Police have confirmed that the Moderator has been questioned by authorities in both Noro and Munda.
Formal charges are expected to be laid following the completion of investigations.
This is not the first time the church leader has been involved in a road incident.
Last year, the Church official and his brother were involved in an accident in which their vehicle reportedly veered into a roadside drain twice in the same evening.
A church Discipline Committee is understood to be overseeing the matter and may take appropriate action depending on the outcome of police investigations.
Meanwhile, Police investigations into the latest incident are ongoing.
