A World War II bomb (unexploded ordinance (UXO) was discovered on Tuesday, 27th May around around lunch time on the eastern side of the Ministry of Fisheries Headquarter in East Honiara.
The discovery was made by a team of Explosive Ordnance (EXO) personnel, led by a retired Bomb Disposal Unit officer.
The device is believed to be an M29 aerial bomb, likely left behind during World War II. It was found near the site of an old military wharf located along the seaside between the Fishing Village and the Ministry of Fisheries head office.
Upon discovery, police quickly responded and issued a public safety warning, advising all individuals within a 100-meter radius to vacate the area until the bomb could be safely disposed of.
The affected areas include the Fishing Village, Solomon Islands National University (SINU), and the Ministry of Fisheries.
Authorities have confirmed that the site will remain restricted from 9am and 11am to allow the bomb squad to safely remove it.
SINU administration had also advised its students about the bomb and to avoid going near the site.
Solomon Islands has been littered by bombs left during the second world war which had claimed the lives of many people.
Government through the support of donor partners are working hard to remove most of the UXO around the country.
