VILLAGERS in the Malaita Outer Islands (MOI) are raising concerns over the low buying prices being offered by four foreign buyers at Pelau and Luaniua.
Reports reaching the Solomon Star indicated that about four foreign buyers are operating in Pelau, purchasing beche-de-mer at prices significantly lower than those set by the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR).
Former Provincial Assembly Member for Ward 31 in the Malaita Outer Islands John Kehosi said, the villagers have lodged complaints and are calling for proper monitoring of buying centers, including those in Honiara.
Similar complaints have also been raised in Auki, where some Asian business operators are allegedly offering below-market prices for beche-de-mer.
A villager in Auki, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Solomon Star the prices offered in Auki are discouraging.
According to the price list published by the MFMR, the highest local market price for high-value beche-de-mer species is SBD $2,500 per kilogram, while the lowest for less valuable species is SBD $200 per kilogram.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources officially lifted the national ban on beche-de-mer harvesting on April 22, 2025.
