As Honiara prepares to host the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting next week the Honiara City Council (HCC) administration is appealing to all residents and visitors to join a united effort to keep our city clean, safe, and welcoming.
Speaking during the weekend Talkback Show, Mr. Wilson Eta, Director of HCC’s Waste Management and Control Division, emphasized the importance of presenting Honiara as a clean and organized host city.
“This is a unique opportunity for Solomon Islands to demonstrate our commitment to leadership, unity, and environmental responsibility.
“A clean and well-maintained city reflects our pride, respect for the environment, and readiness to welcome Pacific leaders and guests with dignity.”
Mr Eta added that regular waste collection will be done by HCC’s own waste collection fleet, including contractors.
He added that a growing concern for the Council is the increasing number of derelict vehicles obstructing public roads and spaces.
Mr. Eta calls for their voluntary removal. There will come a time when enforcement actions will be taken.
Maintaining a clean city is not only crucial for public health and the visitor experience, but also reinforces the Forum’s vision for a resilient and thriving Pacific.
He stated that this effort contributes to strengthening the national image of the Solomon Islands and sets an example for the broader Pacific region.
Mr. Eta said the Honiara City Council encourages all residents to dispose of waste in designated bins, join community clean-up efforts, and promote environmental awareness in schools, workplaces, and communities.
HCC reaffirms its commitment to supporting environmental sustainability through collaboration with local authorities, community groups, and the public for a clean and safe Honiara during the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Honiara next week from 8–12 September.
