The Gizo–Kolombangara Constituency (GKC) has outlined major flagship project deliveries for 2025, focusing on fisheries, forestry and agriculture as key drivers of local economic growth.
Speaking on Monday during the GKC Cup celebrations under the theme “One Constituency, One Future: Showcasing Culture, Talent and Development,” Member of Parliament for Gizo–Kolombangara Constituency, Hon. Jimson Tanaganda, said the initiatives reflect the constituency’s commitment to practical and people-centred development.
“Development must be practical and impactful. These projects are not handouts, but tools to help our people become productive, generate income, and build sustainable livelihoods,” Hon. Tanaganda said.
The event was attended by the Minister for Forestry, Hon. Jenty Isaac, the Minister for Planning, Hon. Sutcliffe George of the Western Provincial Government, Gizo Ward MPA Hon. Tapuia Eribati, chiefs and elders of the Leanabako Tribe and Kolombangara Island, community leaders, church leaders, women and youth representatives, the business community, development partners, and representatives of KFPL and joint forestry ventures.
Hon. Tanaganda said the constituency has deliberately prioritised productive sectors that directly benefit households and communities.
“For 2025, our focus is on fisheries, forestry and agriculture because these are the sectors that our people depend on daily. By investing in these areas, we are investing in the future of our constituency,” he said.
Confirmed project deliveries for this month include 10 boats and engines to support small-scale and community-based fishing activities.
In the agriculture and forestry sectors, the constituency will deliver 15 coconut driers to improve copra quality, 25,000 seedlings for forest outgrowers, 20,000 polybags and greenhouse materials for cocoa farmers, 100 wheelbarrows, 100 farming knives and spades, and 50 chainsaws for registered farmers.
Hon. Tanaganda emphasised that the investments are aimed at helping constituents move beyond subsistence living.
“Our vision is to move from subsistence to commercial production, strengthen household income, create employment—especially for our youths and women—and at the same time protect and sustainably manage our natural resources,” he said.
He reaffirmed the GKC leadership’s commitment to working closely with communities, partners and stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery and effective use of the projects for the long-term benefit of the people of Gizo and Kolombangara.
