The Malaita Provincial Government has unveiled plans for a major road project aimed at opening up the island’s highlands for agricultural development.
Provincial Secretary Erick George disclosed the proposal during a press tour at the Premier’s Office in Auki fortnight ago, organised by the Embassy of Japan in Solomon Islands.
The proposed highway would run from Foia in North Malaita to Afio in the southern region, creating access for communities in the highlands and encouraging people to return to small-scale farming.
“The whole idea is to bring people back to the highlands and engage more heavily in agriculture by establishing their own small agricultural farms,” Mr George said.
He noted that many coastal areas are increasingly populated, contributing to land disputes.
Migration trends dating back to the colonial period, including the Maasina Ruru, resulted in many inland communities relocating to coastal areas.
The highway project intends to reconnect old colonial tracks and upgrade them into modern road infrastructure.
Mr George highlighted that proper road access will facilitate investment in economic opportunities beyond agriculture.
The province is seeking technical support for engineering design and expertise, welcoming assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Other proposed initiatives include an international transshipment facility at Bina Harbour, additional roads and bridges, and improved waste management systems.
The provincial government emphasized its openness to working with development partners. Mr George thanked the Japanese delegation and media for their visit, noting that the provincial leadership, including the Premier, supports the proposed projects.
The highway is part of broader efforts to reduce population pressure in coastal communities while stimulating economic activity in Malaita’s interior.
