Fataleka Constituency hands over 121 new homes to rural families and plans to build more than 500 houses by 2028 to improve living standards.
HONIARA – Fataleka Constituency in East Kwaio, Malaita Province has handed over 121 newly built homes to rural families as part of an ambitious plan to construct more than 500 houses by 2028.
The housing initiative is led by Fataleka Member of Parliament and Minister of Finance and Treasury Rexon Ramofafia, who says the program is aimed at improving living standards and addressing rural poverty in the constituency.
The first batch of homes was officially handed over during a ceremony at Subobono Village on February 14, where hundreds of residents gathered to witness the milestone event.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Ramofafia said the “500 Homes by 2028” vision reflects the government’s commitment to improving the lives of rural families.
“We are changing lives and livelihoods. By 2028, when Solomon Islands celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence, we must also see clear evidence of progress and improved living standards for our people,” he said.
The housing program is implemented through a partnership between the government, the constituency office and local communities. The constituency office supplies building materials and hires experienced carpenters, while families contribute local materials such as gravel and timber and assist with labour.
Fataleka Constituency Development Officer Charles Laua said nearly SBD$6 million has been invested in the project since 2020.
He confirmed that 121 two-bedroom houses have been completed and occupied, while work is continuing on more than 520 additional structures.
“Our target is to complete more than 200 homes by the end of this year,” Mr Laua said.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development, John Misite’e, praised the initiative, saying it demonstrates how government support and community cooperation can improve lives in rural areas.
“These homes are not just buildings; they are foundations for stronger families and a more prosperous Fataleka,” Mr Misite’e said.
The housing project is funded through the government’s Constituency Development Fund (CDF), a national program administered by the Ministry of Rural Development to improve social and economic livelihoods across all 50 constituencies.
