Tropical Cyclone Maila battered Western Province for more than five days, leaving widespread devastation across communities. Schools have been destroyed, hospitals and clinics severely disrupted, homes damaged, and food gardens uprooted.
The livelihoods of vulnerable groups—particularly women, youth, and children—have been profoundly affected.
In the aftermath of Maila, the absence of visible leadership from the Western Provincial Premier, Hon. Billy Veo, is deeply concerning.
Hon Rence Sore, a Spokesman for the Non-Executive Committee said, the people of Western Province expect their Premier to be the first voice of reassurance on the airwaves, the first presence in the streets of Gizo once the cyclone subsides, and the first to accompany emergency officials into affected areas.
“Although Cyclone Maila has passed, its impact remains. Families are homeless, food insecurity is imminent, and communities are struggling to recover.
“Yet, the Premier’s words of guidance and encouragement—messages that should provide hope and direction—have not been heard.”
The Non-Executive Committee calls upon the Premier to demonstrate visible leadership in this time of suffering, he said.
“We urge him to stand with the people, provide care and reassurance, and ensure that immediate relief and long-term recovery efforts are prioritized.”
