Solomon Islands Director National Disaster Management Office and Chair of the National Disaster Operations Committee (NDOC) has acknowledged the outpouring of support to support victims of cyclone Maila.
Mr. Johnathan Tafiariki on Friday thanked all organizations, business houses, and individuals in assisting the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO).
During a press conference held on Friday at the NDMO office, he commended the timely contributions of essential food and non-food supplies, including household and shelter kits.
He said the assistance has played a critical role in delivering much-needed relief to affected communities across the country.
“The contributions we are receiving are vital in supporting those impacted by the cyclone. It is encouraging to see organizations, businesses, and individuals stepping forward during this challenging time,” Mr. Tafiariki said.
“At the moment, we are still receiving supports of food supplies and non-food supplies from organizations, business houses and individuals. These supports will soon deployed to affected areas,” Tafiariki said.
He explained that response operations are currently being led by the Provincial Disaster Committees in each of the affected provinces, in line with the national disaster response plan.
“So far, operations are being coordinated at the provincial level, with each province implementing its arrangements under the national plan to ensure full response coverage,” he added.
Mr. Tafiariki further revealed that relief supplies, including both food and non-food items, have already been deployed to affected areas in Western and Choiseul provinces, with vessels dispatched to support delivery efforts.
“In addition, the Government patrol boat is currently stationed in Western Province to support the distribution of emergency relief supplies,” he said.
He also acknowledged the ongoing efforts of individuals, non-governmental organizations, and civil society groups working on the ground.
“I would like to thank every individual, NGO, and civil society members and everyone who are actively involved on the ground, working together to coordinate and deliver assistance to the affected communities,” Mr. Tafiariki said.
Cyclone Maila has impacted several provinces, prompting a coordinated national and provincial response to address the immediate needs of affected populations.
Meanwhile, as NDMO is continuing to receive supports from organizations, business houses and individuals at the moment, every supports receive will soon be deployed to the affected areas.
