African Giant snails have been sighted Thursday, by market security personnel at the Auki market.
Chief security Ben Maenakefo told the paper in Auki yesterday they saw the live snails crawling along the walkway at the market.
“This is the first ever case where we discover the snails here at the market.”
Mr Maenakefo believes the snails were brought over from Honiara by some people carrying vegetables and root crops to sell.
“We suspect these snails have been brought over to Auki by some Honiara market vendors last week who were here to sell their crops at the market.”
Mr Maenakefo appeals to Honiara-based market vendors to check their crops well before traveling over to Auki.
“If not we will bound you from selling their crops here at Auki market.”
He said, they will closely monitoring market vendors to stop the pest from entering the province.
“Responsible authorities must seriously do their duties to stop these from happening.”
