AUKI: Students of Auki Primary School, Malaita were given a rare chance to experience Japanese culture when the school hosted a lively Japan Festival on August 9, 2025.
The event was led by Japanese volunteer Yamato Kazuki, who is currently teaching at Auki Primary School under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Through songs, dances, calligraphy, face painting, and cultural displays, students were able to explore traditions from Japan while also celebrating ties between the two countries.
“In the past, JICA volunteers have organised Japan Festivals in Honiara,” Mr. Kazuki explained.
“I wanted to give students and teachers in Auki the same opportunity to learn about and experience Japanese culture, so I decided to bring the festival here.”
Mr. Kazuki is the only JICA volunteer currently serving in Auki.

His work mainly supports mathematics and physical education classes at the school. His term in Solomon Islands will last two years
Preparation for the festival was a collaborative effort between the volunteer, students, teachers, and the local community.
“We practised songs, made displays, and worked together on all the preparations. It was a valuable experience for all of us,” he said.
This festival was made possible through the cooperation of many people, and it was a wonderful experience for everyone involved, he said.
The festival was not only educational but also strengthened friendships between Japan and Solomon Islands, creating lasting memories for the children of Auki Primary School.
Mr. Kazuki said, he looks forward to continuing his work with the school, helping teachers and students build a better learning environment.
