STUDENTS from Burns Creek Seventh Day Adventist Secondary School in East Honiara actively participated in the World Food Day celebrations opening ceremony in Honiara on Wednesday.
The three-day event themed: “Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future,” provides students from Agriculture and Home Economics classes with valuable, hands-on experience to enhance their understanding of food security and nutrition.
As part of their curriculum activity, the students engaged with agricultural vendors and experts, gaining insights into healthy eating and the importance of local food systems.
Accompanied by their teacher Serah Newter, the students engaged in a vibrant array of activities, which included visiting information stalls showcasing local agricultural practices and sustainable food systems.
“It’s amazing to see our students involved and learn firsthand about food production and nutrition,” Mrs Newter said.
“Being here today is not just about celebrating food. It’s about understanding our rights to food and how we can contribute to a sustainable future,” she added.
Throughout the day, students visited various stalls, interacted with local farmers and entrepreneurs dedicated to advocating for food security.
“Events like these help our students make connections between their studies and the real world and I’m so happy to be a part of this journey with them.
“It empowers them to think critically about food production and challenges they may face in their own futures in terms of Agriculture,” Mrs Newter said.
A Form 4 student Xena Pitubangara said, “I learned a lot about how to grow crops sustainably the role of nutrition in our daily lives and how to make cocoa chocolate from our own cocoa.”
“Seeing all the different food and talking to farmers help me understand the hard work that goes into producing what we eat,” she added.
The students returned to school with a renewed sense of purpose and knowledge about the importance of their rights and roles in ensuring food sustainability in their community.
