TEMOTU Province has suffered some damages to its infrastructure and food gardens from the recent Cyclone Donna.
According to the Solomon Islands National Emergency Operations Centre (SI NEOC) confirmed that four dwelling houses and twelve kitchens in Namo village collapsed to the ground, however all of the houses sustain reparable damages.
“There were two casualties, an adult who was struck by a fallen branch and a primary school student of Tarano School who drowned on an OBM when crossing from one-side to other side of the lake, however,” the Centre reported.
The NEOC reported said crops are destroyed particularly with the effects of the winds.
“Water supply system needs some maintenance.
“The Telekom tower is back in operations as of 9th Tuesday 5pm and so communication to the island was restored.”
Villages are doing some clean-ups over the past days, clearing fallen trees using chainsaws.
“Classroom and teaching and learning resources at Safoa community high school received damages,” it was reported.
For Makira Province and initial damage assessment for South and North Star Harbour of Makira is currently underway while Rebel Province reported no major damage.
Solomon Star understands, the Solomon Islands Alliance of Humanitarian NGOs (SIAHN) is coordinating support to the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) to assess the impact of recent Cyclone Donna in remote Islands of Temotu Province.
The NDMO is sending Patrol Boat Auki to Temotu over the weekend (Friday 12th May), to conduct an initial disaster assessment, and if required, distribute relief supplies.
