AS the uncontrolled spread of the Giant African snail are causing major damages to garden crops and vegetables in and around Honiara, it is advisable that residents must take the responsibility in eliminating the dangerous pest.
Speaking to this paper, a Honiara resident Paul Aihunu said the government through the responsible ministry has failed miserably to play its part in fighting the spread of the snails.
Mr Aihunu added, by now people should take their spare time to do daily cleaning ups around their homes to fight against the pest.
“It is time now that Honiara residence do spare some time to fight against the spread of the life-threatening pest.
________We all must take responsibility to fight these increasing number of snail by checking out their hot spots such as in cold rubbish bins as they are most vulnerable to these locations,________ he said.
Mr Aihunu told this paper that everyone must not overlook this issue or down hearted following its increasing populations, but must have to step-in and start collecting these giant snails and burn them or find a suitable way to eliminate them.
He said that if nothing is done on this issue, and while many residents in Honiara have now been experiencing its intimidations, each one have to do something serious to reduce this pest by cleaning their surrounding environments.
________At the moment, residents still did not think heavily on this matter, because we only experienced its minor causes. However, if we do not step in to fight them, we will regret our resources, in terms of crops, plants and other valuable greens to us humans,________ he said.
He added that to-date, the country is yet in good stage to start fight against these pest as they are not yet reach some parts of the country and thus Honiara residents need to be accountable for the fight against these pests.
________In other parts of the world like Florida in the USA, it is illegal to have such pest as a pet, as it is claimed to be one of the most dangerous species on earth and while some parts of Africa turned to be like a desert as a result of these life-threatening pests,________ the Vura two resident said.
Mr Paul further added that these Snails only plays three significant roles while living on this earth; first is that, they sleep, they move and they eat whatever is on their way regardless of whether a fresh or non-fresh matters.
