MALAITANS living in Taro, Choiseul Province, last week gathered to celebrate Malaita Province’s 41st Second Appointed Day anniversary.
Malaita Province celebrated its Second Appointed Day every August 15 to commemorate its attainment of provincial status on 15 August 1983.
The Malaita Day event in Taro was not only a cultural celebration as it provided a platform for reconciliation between the Malaitan community and the people of Choiseul Province.
This reconciliation addressed political tensions involving the Malaitan community and the former Democratic Coalition Government for Advancement (DCGA) led by the East Choiseul Member Parliament, Manasseh Sogavare as Prime Minister.
The event also provided an opportunity for the Malaitan community to convey their appreciation to the Choiseulese for their hospitality towards Malaitans residing in the province.
The event also provided the Malaitan community an opportunity for Malaitans to proudly display their rich cultural heritage, which was warmly received by the local Choiseulese community.
There was vibrant cultural performances, music and speeches which underscored the importance of unity and cultural preservation within the Malaitan community in Choiseul.
The Premier of Choiseul Province delivered the official opening address, setting the tone for the event.
Community leaders and provincial officials who attended the event emphasized the importance of harmonious coexistence, mutual respect and the significant contributions of the Malaitan community to the development of Choiseul Province.
The event also highlighted the need for ongoing collaboration between the Malaitan and Choiseulese communities to foster peace and ensure development in the region.
In his keynote speech, Premier Harrison Pitakaka spoke about the significance of the Second Appointed Day and the crucial role of provincial governments in empowering local communities.
Premier Pitaka said the upcoming development of infrastructures and other vital developments in Malaita Province will be a significant boost to both socioeconomic in the province.
“Currently many of our national projects that are on the ground will take us to milestone achievements and we are pleased to be working close with the current Government under the leadership of Jeremiah Manele,” he said.
He also urged the younger generation to take pride in their cultural identity and at the same time contribute positively to the growth of their province and the nation as a whole.
