THE issuance of the mineral prospecting business license to the New Asian Mining Company by the Premier Martin Fini-led government has attracted more negative reactions than positive reactions from Malaitans.
The Fini led Malaita New Government for Fundamental Redirection (MNGFR) issued a business license to the New Asian Mining Company in April this year, just two months after assuming office.
The MNGFR issued the mineral prospecting business license at the price of SBD2500k.
The New Asian Mining Company is now carrying out mineral prospecting in East Malaita.
Many commentators from Malaita, after learning about the issue, took to social media to voice their frustration at the current ruling government for issuing licenses to the mining company, stating that Malaita is better off without mining.
Some are quick to point out that mining on Rennel island in Renbel Province is a good reminder to Malaita Province not to allow mining.
Reports reaching Solomon Star Auki claimed that the presence of the New Asia Mining Company in East Malaita has created divisions amongst landowners as there are claims that the Surface Access Agreement (SAA) allowing company to conduct mineral prospecting in East Malaita was made without due compliance to the lawful process.
With that, some commentators have raised concern that the presence of the mining company in East Malaita could fuel further conflict amongst the locals themselves and with the company in the near future.
