THE National Training Unit (NTU) in the Ministry of Education will be stricter on awarding of scholarships and on continuing SIG sponsored students.
It was reported, that with a new leadership and management team within NTU and the Ministry, selection for this year’s SIG scholarship recipients and decision on who to continue will see a major shift.
The reports stated that a good number of SIG sponsored students will be suspended and others facing scholarship termination.
Director of NTU Clement Tito when asked said NTU will not implement any new policies or processes but is only enforcing the existing processes.
Mr Tito said his team will be more transparent on the selection process and decisions on continuing students.
He said the public should not make any comments at this stage because the list is yet to be released.
He said the problem of nepotism and political interference should be a problem of the past and should exit with previous officers.
Mr Tito said this year; they have a new team that aims to rebuild the Unit in terms of regaining confidence through transparency and decisions based on merit.
He said the process of selecting new and decision on continuing students is continuing.
He said the list will be finalised by the end of the week and will be available early next week.
“Not until the list is put out to the public, making unnecessary comments at this stage is unacceptable.”
He said NTU is making the assessment of candidates but the final say will come from the National Training Commission.
“NTC will have the final say on the list and on any decisions regarding suspension of scholarships.
“This is a New Year and new people are in the office to manage it, therefore what happened in the past reflects the kind of people managing the office in the past.”
