A founding member of the People’s Alliance Party (PAP), Kamilio Teke of Guadalcanal says the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands, RAMSI must be commended for instilling a peaceful environment in Solomon Islands.
He says the Alliance Party led Coalition Government headed by Sir Allan Kemakeza brought RAMSI into the country in 2003 to end the ethnic conflicts.
Mr Teke said as such, he is obliged to comment on what RAMSI had achieved and what will likely happen and what should not happen after its departure towards the end of June.
“RAMSI must be commended for returning the rule of law and for rebuilding the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force during the past 13 years to the stage where people have regained their confidence in the Police Force.”
The former PAP Member of Parliament for West Guadalcanal, Mr Teke said sustaining the peaceful environment RAMSI has built over its 13-year presence is a must to keep because the intervention forces will not be present in Solomon Islands forever.
He said Solomon Islanders must take ownership of that peaceful environment and must be responsible to sustain it.
RAMSI will be farewelled at the end of next month.
