HONIARA City Mayor Edward Siapu has expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the Honiara Central Market Western Extension, a project initiated during his leadership tenure at the Honiara City Council.
Funded by the Australian Government in collaboration with the council, this SBD10 million endeavor aims to provide better infrastructure for market vendors.
Mayor Siapu, who is also contesting the Lengakiki ward in the HCC, highlighted the project’s importance in offering shelter to vendors, enabling them to conduct business comfortably even during rainy weather conditions.
Moreover, he revealed plans for the establishment of five bus stops along the route from Central Market to the eastern part of Honiara, enhancing accessibility for commuters.
During a recent visit to the market, Australia’s High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Mr. Rod Hilton, emphasized that the expansion of Honiara Central Market would enhance the market experience for all stakeholders.
This expansion includes undercover protection and designated market benches for up to 100 vendors.
Mr Hilton met with vendors and the local contractor, Tropic Group Builders, who are overseeing the demolition works at the western end of the market.
Construction of the western extension is slated for completion by June, with the market remaining operational throughout the process, ensuring continued access to fresh produce such as fish, fruit, and vegetables.
Australia’s markets redevelopment program extends its support to markets across six provinces, including Malaita, Guadalcanal, Central, Isabel, Makira, and Western Province. Market vendors eagerly anticipate the completion of the extension, which will shield them from the harsh elements, including the scorching sun and heavy rain, ultimately improving their working conditions and overall quality of life.
