The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) has showcased the Niu Future programme to members of the Anglican youth during a meeting held in Gizo, Western Province on Wednesday.
The programme is designed to support young people to become leaders and identify issues affecting them and how they can work together with other stakeholders to address those issues.
The programme has started in Honiara.
The Niu Future was showcased to promote ideas for youth engagement in Gizo.
Speaking at the opening of the program on 6 November, the Gizo Anglican Church Choir Master George Sina who is a police officer himself said the Gizo Anglican youth is one of the minority youth groups here in Gizo and they are pleased to have the RSIPF officials visiting them.
“It is a good thing that police officers are here so that we too can share our views and to better understand the duties of the police in our communities and to understand our roles to make a better community,” he said.
RSIPF Community Policing officer Police constable Suesta Ngelea said youth is not always a problem.
“We must view them as assets in our communities. They have capabilities to become future leaders if we identify their needs,” Ngelea said.
During the program in Gizo there were a lot of discussions by participants on how Police and other stakeholders can identify and work closely with young people.
The Niu Future programme is coordinated by the National Community Policing Department, Honiara City Council (HCC) Youth Hub and Honiara Youth Council supported by New Zealand Police under the Solomon Islands Police Support Program for the RSIPF.
