SPEAKER of Parliament Ajilon Jasper Nasiu has asked Members of Parliament to be punctual for Parliament sittings to ensure outstanding businesses are not prolonged.
Speaking at the opening of Parliament on Monday, Mr Nasiu said there are still 72 questions on notice, 11 Bills tabled including the 2017 Appropriation Bill 2016 and two motions.
He said it is always in the best interest of Parliament that businesses before it are dispatched as soon as possible.
He said in accordance to the practices of Parliament, when a motion for second reading of the Appropriation Bill is moved, proceedings of the Appropriation Bill takes precedent of any other motion or Bill.
The Speaker added that said it is important in appropriating funds to supply proposed budget heads, that it warrants this house to expediently dispose relevant matters according to prescribe rule.
Therefore, he said parliamentarians must be reminded that sittings must be seen to start at 9.30am each sitting day – “requiring punctuality on your part”.
“The issue of quorum or no attendance by members has the effect of dragging businesses thus unnecessary prolonging meetings,” Mr Nasiu said.
“I will ensure that every procedural tools are not used to unnecessary curtail the proceedings of this house.
“And I will on the day make necessary rulings to this effect.”
