Hundreds of students from various schools across Honiara gathered on Friday at The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) state-of-the-art King George Campus in Honiara for the 2025 USP Open Day.
Themed “Serving the Pacific”, this year’s event built on the success of last year’s inaugural celebration at the new campus.
The full-day programme offered secondary school students, parents, and the wider community a taste of university life—from interactive school and stakeholder booths to cultural showcases and prize giveaways.
Welcoming the crowd, USP Solomon Islands Officer-in-Charge, Clayton Kuma, reaffirmed the University’s commitment to quality education and Pacific futures.
The 2025 Open Day featured information sessions with USP’s six schools, guided tours of the King George Campus, and interactive engagements with key stakeholders including Solomon Airlines, Kokonut Pacific, and the Young Entrepreneurs Council of Solomon Islands (YECSI).
Rihanto, a student from Honiara High School, shared his experience at the USP 2025 Open Day.
“Attending the USP Open Day was truly inspiring. The University of the South Pacific shows students like us that there are so many opportunities available after completing Form 5 and 6,” he said.
“From exploring the campus to engaging with lecturers and interactive booths, I could see the pathways toward a brighter future. It was motivating to hear directly how USP is shaping the next generation across the Pacific.”

Lae Maeohu, a teacher at Honiara Senior High School, also reflected on the event.
“The USP Open Day provides young minds with a glimpse into what university life is like and the opportunities that lie ahead.
“Seeing students interact with academic and cultural displays, ask questions, and explore different fields was wonderful. USP inspires, opens doors, and empowers students to work toward a brighter future.”
At the School of Agriculture, Geography, Environment, Oceans, and Natural Sciences (SAGEONS) booth, lecturers and students highlighted study programmes, research areas, and career pathways. Visitors also engaged with interactive displays, including posters, models, and science experiments.
“We want to show students that science is not only about theory but also about discovery and innovation. By engaging them through hands-on experiments and real-life examples, we hope to inspire their interest in science and encourage them to see the many opportunities for their future,” said Wilson Maeaba, Lecturer at SAGEONS.

Alongside SAGEONS, the other five schools also showcased vibrant learning pathways:
- School of Accounting, Finance and Economics (SAFE) promoted careers in business, finance, and economics;
- School of Business and Management (SBM) highlighted leadership and management studies;
- School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics (STEMP) presented innovative projects in technology and applied sciences;
- School of Law and Social Sciences (SoLaSS) emphasised law, governance, and social sciences as foundations for strong communities;
- School of Pacific Arts, Communication and Education (SPACE) celebrated Pacific creativity and identity through arts, media, and education.
Beyond the academic booths, the lively programme featured cultural performances by USP Solomon Islands Student Associations, entertainment, photo opportunities, and prize draws- creating an atmosphere that reflected both the academic and cultural spirit of USP.
The USP Solomon Islands Open Day has become a much-anticipated annual event, bridging the gap between secondary schools and higher education while reinforcing USP’s reputation as a hub of academic excellence, innovation, and Pacific pride.
