WHITE River Community High School (CHS) in West Honiara proudly hosted its annual speech contest on Wednesday 7th May.
The speech day was based on the theme: ‘Live to Influence, Motivate, and Inspire’.
The event featured 25 talented orators who took to the stage to articulate their thoughts on critical issues such as climate change, discipline, mobile technology, corruption, and the pressing need for public toilets in Honiara City.
The competition was divided into three main categories: Junior (Forms 1-2), Intermediate (Forms 3-4), and Senior (Forms 5-6), allowing students of various age groups to showcase their public speaking skills.
School Principal Hampton Bekepio emphasized the importance of the contest as a platform for skill development.
“This annual event is designed to provide an avenue for our students to help them develop public speaking skills and gain confidence,” he explained.

Principal Bekepio further mentioned that the school actively supports students’ development beyond the classroom.
“One of our advantages is that every Monday, we hold school assemblies organized and run by the students themselves.
“This initiative helps them build confidence and learn how to present themselves in front of an audience,” he added.
Speech contests have been a longstanding tradition at White River, with students frequently participating in similar events outside of school, fostering a culture of public speaking.

Reflecting on this year’s contest, Principal Bekepio acknowledged areas for improvement.
“Some students are still relying on their notes during presentations, but moving forward, we will work to identify these areas and provide targeted support, especially to the winners, as they prepare for future competitions,” he stated.
He noted that while many participants exhibited signs of nervousness, the overall level of participation was commendable.
“This is a learning environment. Some students were understandably anxious, but overall, everyone gave their best effort,” he remarked.
“With more experience and preparation, we will be even better equipped next time,” Mr. Bekepio concluded, looking forward to future events that will continue to inspire and empower students through the art of public speaking.
