Government through the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development is issuing an update for its education stakeholders regarding Tropical Cyclone Maila, based on information from SITREP #5:
- ALL weather warnings for Western and Choiseul Provinces are now cancelled; there are teams moving to the affected schools for assessment and collecting information.
- First shipment of curriculum resources has already left Honiara for 17 schools in Western Province on the 21st April 2026 on MV Airi.
- A request for 28 tents has been made to UNICEF who has agreed to provide to schools for temporary classrooms.
- Arrangements are being made for MEHRD Engineers to travel to affected schools to assess damage and guide rebuilding efforts.
- Save the Children and UNICEF are working together in collaboration with MEHRD, to provide child-friendly spaces, psychosocial support and WASH supplies like soap and water filters in the schools affected by the cyclone.
MEHRD continues to make progress supporting schools most affected by the recent disaster in Western and Choiseul Provinces.
Efforts are focus on restoring damaged classrooms, dormitories and early childhood facilities, with ongoing assessments, partner coordination and delivery of essential support ensuring timely recovery.
Deputy Secretary Christopher Sakiri Chair NDOC – Education emphasized:
“For schools to resume effectively, we must go beyond repairing classrooms. Students and teachers need safe spaces, clean water, health services, and psychosocial support to recover and continue learning.”
MEHRD is working closely with donor partners including DFAT, MFAT, UNICEF, and Save the Children to ensure that children can return to learning as soon as possible.
MEHRD provides updates twenty-four (24) hourly but also determined by availability of new information from ALL Education Providers.
