Government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MALD) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening agricultural development through international partnerships following a high-level bilateral meeting with delegates from Guizhou Province, People’s Republic of China.
The meeting, hosted in Honiara, brought together Hon. Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development Nestor Giro, senior MALD officials, representatives from the Chinese Embassy, and delegates from the Guizhou Provincial Foreign Affairs Office and the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science under the Guizhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
In his opening remarks, Hon Giro welcomed the Guizhou delegation and acknowledged the importance of the discussions in advancing the agricultural sector in Solomon Islands.
He emphasized that such engagements are vital for strengthening partnerships that will benefit the country’s agricultural development.
Deputy Director-General of the Guizhou Provincial Foreign Affairs Office, Mrs. Luo Yu, provided an overview of Guizhou Province, noting its location in southwest China and its largely mountainous terrain, which covers approximately 93 percent of its land area.
With a population of around 38 million, Guizhou has transformed significantly over the past decades from one of China’s poorest regions into a rapidly developing province.
Mrs. Luo highlighted that Guizhou has already established cooperation with several Solomon Islands ministries, including the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, through the deployment of the Chinese Medical Team since 2022.
She further emphasized that Solomon Islands possesses abundant land resources and a unique climate, offering strong potential for agricultural development.
Drawing from Guizhou’s experience in mountainous agriculture, he expressed confidence in identifying opportunities for collaboration, including agricultural processing, climate-resilient farming, and marine-based agriculture.
Director of the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Mrs. Wei Xiaoping, outlined three key areas for potential cooperation:
Joint Research – including genetic resource identification, breeding of crops and livestock, and pest management practices.
Establishment of Facilities – development of laboratories and agricultural demonstration sites.
Capacity Building – exchange programs, including short-term and long-term training opportunities in agriculture.
A representative from the Chinese Embassy described the meeting as a symbolic milestone, marking the beginning of a new chapter in bilateral agricultural cooperation between Solomon Islands and Guizhou Province.
She highlighted plans to establish demonstration sites in Solomon Islands, introduce agricultural machinery, and deploy Chinese agricultural experts to support knowledge transfer and technical development.
In his closing remarks, Minister Giro expressed appreciation for the comprehensive discussions and reaffirmed MALD’s openness to collaboration.
He acknowledged Solomon Islands’ strong agricultural potential but stressed the need for research-driven development to ensure sustainability.
The Minister also outlined key challenges facing the sector, including the country’s scattered geography, which complicates service delivery across provinces, and the impacts of climate change.
He emphasized the importance of developing climate-resilient agricultural systems and welcomed partnerships that address these challenges.
Deputy Secretary Technical Mr. Michael Hoota added that MALD is currently working towards the re-establishment of the Tenaru Research Station to rebuild national research capacity.
He noted that the proposed bilateral cooperation would significantly enhance agricultural research and innovation in Solomon Islands.
The meeting concluded with both parties expressing optimism about future collaboration and a shared commitment to strengthening agricultural development through knowledge exchange, research, and technical cooperation.
